PostHeaderIcon Do I really need a baby monitor even if my baby will be in a room down the hall while I’m sleeping?

baby monitor

My husband and I are fighting nonstop about a baby monitor, there are several couples on our street who have babies and who will around the time we will have ours. I feel we need to spend more on a monitor so we don’t pick up other babies crying on ours, and he doesn’t want to spend any extra money. Can any parents tell me will I wake up if I don’t have a monitor close by? Help!

You will wake up, but a monitor is also really handy during naptime when you may not be jsut down the hall from you baby. You can keep the monitor with you and always know that you’ll hear your baby where ever you happen to be in the house.

If I know I could hear the baby I don’t use the monitor.

I never had a monitor. It just depends on how light/heavy sleeper you are. While your in the hospital try to keep the baby in your room so you have some idea of how well you hear and wake up. A lot of moms say they can wake up to their baby crying but could sleep through a tornado LOL it’s just one of those things.

Sometimes you are so dead tired that you will not wake up easily. Having a monitor close by helps you wake up better, and besides, it was SO handy when the baby was taking a nap and I was trying to get some laundry or dishes done.

Of course you’ll wake up! But it really depends how heavy a sleeper you are as to how long she needs to cry before you or your husband hear her. Obviously keeping all your bedroom doors open will be helpful as well.

I never had a monitor, I think they can be a waste of money when the child is only a few metres down the hall. Although I’m quite a heavy sleeper, but my hubby would just nudge me awake when it was my turn.

Alot of parents have a new born baby in a bassinet in their rooms for a couple months to work out the babys sleep patterns. If you’re concerned about not waking up, then that might be an idea for you. You can then put her in the nursery after 2-3 months.

We have one, and basically we hear him if it’s off anyway, BUT it’s summer and we have fans going so I wouldn’t be able to hear him if he started crying so we have one and I’m glad I do!
Plus what the other woman said, it’s great for naps when you aren’t always just down the hall!

I have a monitor for times when I want to go outside while she’s napping, or shower or something. I always hear her if she happens to be sleeping in another room at night. Always. And you will too. It just happens.

I don’t use a monitor at night for my 4 month old, she has been in her own room since 1 month and I hear her just fine when she wakes up. We also have a fan on in our room as well as a sound machine in hers. My husband does not wake up when she cries but I do, I think it is just a mother’s instinct, we are so in tune with our little ones! I do reccomend a monitor for when you need to be doing something outside and won’t hear him/her or for peace of mind when you have company or are watching tv and might not here cries over every day noise.
